Facebook claims 150 million mobile users

Facebook claims to have about 150 million mobile users and expects mobile phones to be a crucial platform for the future.

"Mobile is fast becoming our growth lever," Eric Tseng, head of mobile products at Facebook told attendees of the MobileBeat 2010 conference in San Francisco, according to US reports.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg put the number of mobile users at 100 million in April, which means a 50% growth in the past three months.

Tseng predicts Facebook's mobile platforms will "catch up" with its PC browser-based interface in the next six months, with mobile phones being the main way of connecting to the internet in many emerging countries.

The social networking firm is planning to update the application programming interfaces (APIs) for the Android and iPhone platforms.

The firm also plans to extend Facebook features on to other sites to take advantage of mobile use to enable things like friends' ratings to be incorporated into local restaurant promotions.
