Severn Trent Water is to procure a major IT management system that will give it both a business view and a systems view across its wide and varied IT landscape.

The utility company already has monitoring software for its Unix, Oracle, Windows Server, IBM Websphere, and networking systems. However, the new tool will integrate with these, giving the company a single view of its IT assets, and providing early warning signals of impending IT problems.
The company said in a tendering statement, “Severn Trent Water has a requirement for an enterprise systems management console/portal.
“It will include the capability of providing a single consolidated, consistent and intelligently correlated real-time view of information from all systems and technologies in the estate, as well as the provision of the correlation of alarms from technical elements of the IT infrastructure and from business processes.”
Severn Trent Water already runs a number of IT services platforms, including Tivoli Monitoring V6, MQSoftware’s Qpasa, and network-monitoring software Solarwinds, as well as Symantec’s Enterprise Security Manager.
Severn Trent Water is looking for three years of software maintenance and support, with the option to review on an annual basis.
The procurement project is part of Severn Trent Water’s strategy to consolidate the management of its IT assets, using an IT Infrastructure Library-based approach to IT service management.
In March, water industry regulator Ofwat criticised Severn Trent Water for providing “regulatory data that was either deliberately miscalculated or poorly supported”, which led to prices being set too high. Severn Trent Water has since apologised to its customers.
Last year the company began using the Exor information management system, based on an Oracle database, to help it co-ordinate and schedule roadworks.
Severn Trent Water recently began using technology from Workplace Systems to enable it to issue jobs directly to mobile staff equipped with handheld computers.
