Computer chip maker Intel has criticised mobile phone operators for failing to support WiMax technology for the next generation of mobile phones.

Intel has backed WiMax over rival Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology with billions of dollars of investment in WiMax operators.

Intel chief Paul Otellini has accused mobile operators of being self-serving in refusing to move on to WiMax as they are still trying to recoup investments in 3G, according to the Financial Times.

This means rivals to WiMax are gaining ground in the competition to be the technology to support 4G mobile connectivity.

But Otellini insists WiMax is a viable 4G technology that is being commercially deployed in some parts of the world.

"It's proven, it's up and running in countries like Japan, the United States and Russia," he told the BBC.
