Computer scientist
Wendy Hall has been made a dame in the New Year honours
list.
The University of Southampton professor was honoured for
services to science and technology. She was awarded a CBE in
2000.
Hall was one of first computer scientists to carry research out
into multimedia and hypermedia. In 2006 she helped to set up the
Web Science Research Initiative, which is pioneering the new
discipline of web science. The institute's work aims to develop a
better understanding of the architectural principles that led to
the web's growth and success. The institute is the first body to
examine the structure and sociology of the web.
A former BCS president, Hall has campaigned to
increase gender balance in the IT profession, founding the BCS
Women's Forum and advocating opportunities for women in technology.
In 2005 she was the first woman to be elector senior vice-president
of the Royal Academy of Engineering. She is currently president of
the Association for Computing Machinery.
Hall said, "I am thrilled to have been honoured in this way, it
is exciting for me personally and for my family, but it is also a
tribute to all the people I have worked with in my career as a
scientist and engineer both at Southampton and in the wider
community."
