Visa is developing mobile payments software for handsets running
Google's Android mobile phone operating system.
The application will initially be available to download on
Android handsets carried by Chase Visa cardholders in the US. Other
US Visa issuers are expected to follow.
Users of the mobile payments service will be sent transaction
notifications and promotional offers from merchants.
The service will also use Android's in-built location-based
technology to inform Visa customers about nearby retailers that can
redeem offers. They will also be able to locate their nearest ATM
using the system.
In addition, Visa is developing a payments application that will
enable its customers to make contactless mobile payments in shops
using Nokia handsets.
The first Google Android handset was launched by T-Mobile in the
US this week. It will be available to customers from next
month.
