Food firmWeetabixhas deployed a mobilebarcode-labelling system at its four UK food manufacturing sites to help it comply with food labelling and traceability legislation.

The system allows Weetabix staff to label pallets as they come off the production line without the firm having to install barcode printing equipment at the end of every production line.

"Each site has many factories with numerous production lines. We did not want to hardwire a vast amount of hardware into the factories. We wanted a more flexible system," said a senior product manager at Weetabix.

The mobile units use Intermec scanners and printers with wireless cards. Software developed by Kelgray Products enables the printers to communicate with Weetabix's production management systems over a wireless network.
