IBM has unveiled Open Client Solution, a product
designed to help users to roll-out mixed collaboration and
productivity environments.
Big Blue said the product addresses customer demand to improve
interoperability and provide more choice to run different
suppliers' products that work together.
Customers will now have the opportunity to run a mix of Lotus,
open source, and other commercial software products - running on
either Linux, Microsoft Windows, or, planned for later this year,
the Mac.
IBM developed Open Client Solution based on best practices it
learned from an IBM internal desktop deployment, which supports
open standards, and includes Lotus collaboration software products
running on Red Hat's Enterprise Linux Workstation.
The Open Client Solution complements IBM’s broad roles-based
strategy, which is aimed at providing employees with the right
platform for an individual's specific job role.
The product offers desktop management support and application
migration and is aimed at helping customers pilot, implement, and
gain value from secure Linux and other open standards-based
solutions. Operating system services will be provided by Linux
distributors Red Hat and Novell.
IBM's Open Client Solution supports IBM software such as Lotus
Notes, Lotus Sametime unified comms and collaboration, the
WebSphere Portal 6.0 web development platform, and the Lotus
Expeditor software deployment tool, as well as software from other
suppliers.
