IBM has developed a technology to limit the data breach
threat in radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
Big Blue has licensed its Clipped Tag technology to Marnlen
RFiD, which is beginning immediate production. Developed at IBM's
Watson Research Center, Clipped Tag lets users tear off most of an
RFID tag's wireless antenna, reducing its read range to just a few
inches.
This helps ensure consumer privacy, while maintaining the
benefits of the technology, such as product authentication or
recalls.
IBM's Paul Moskowitz, one of the Clipped Tag's inventors, said,
"Clipped Tag puts privacy protection into the hands of the
consumer, as it gives the consumer a visual confirmation of the
tag's modification. We believe that successful commerce depends on
trust."
Andris Lauris, vice-president for business development at
Marnlen Management, said, "IBM's Clipped Tag concept is an elegant
way to promote the benefits of RFID while protecting privacy. We're
excited to be the first company in our industry to make the concept
a reality."
