Oracle is to support a version of Linux based on Red Hat
Linux to give users a stable open source platform for Oracle
products and other software.
The company will offer an Unbreakable Linux programme to Linux
users starting at £53 per system per year. Oracle said it would
undertake maintenance and patch updates of the Red Hat source
code.
Oracle chief corporate architect Edward Screven said, "We will
maintain compatibility with Red Hat Linux." He said Oracle would
update the Linux operating system code every time Red Hat
distributed a new version.
"All we add are bug fixes, which are immediately available to
Red Hat and the rest of the community."
Key to Oracle's support plan is offering users a way to
standardise on a version of Red Hat without needing to upgrade to
the latest edition each time the operating system requires
patching.
Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison said, "We believe that
better support and lower support prices will speed the adoption of
Linux, and we are working closely with our partners to make that
happen."
