Search engine giant Google has launched a new open
source project hosting service.
Google Project Hosting is aimed at open source developers and
offers project workspaces with simple membership controls, a
version control system based on open source tool Subversion, issue
tracking and mailing lists at groups.google.com
The project hosting site –
http://code.google.com/hosting
– offers the familiar Google search box interface and allows
developers to search for projects using labels such as C++,
Windows, Web or Graphic.
The launch puts Google in competition with established open
source project host SourceForge.
The search engine giant has been stepping up its initiatives in
the open source world, joining the lobby group backing the
OpenDocument file format (ODF) earlier this month. In May it made a
number of its Ajax web development tools, including those used to
develop its Google Maps system, available for free.
