Intel launches Montecito Itanium server chips

Intel has finally launched its Montecito Itanium server chip, a major upgrade for the struggling Itanium processor range.
Originally planned for commercial release last year, Montecito was delayed following technical changes. And IBM, Dell and Sun all refused to sell Itanium-based servers, depriving Intel of major avenues to market.
Each Montecito chip has two processor cores to boost performance. It is the first time the Itanium brand has benefited from dual-core processing.
The six Montecito chip models range in clock speed from 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz. They are aimed at high-end server solutions from the likes of IBM and Sun.
Intel said it expected widespread availability of Montecito-based servers in September. HP, Hitachi, Silicon Graphics, NEC, Bull, Fujitsu and Unisys are among the server manufacturers to back Montecito.
