The football World Cup kicked off last week with Fifa’s
IT team expecting a major denial of service attack on its
networks.
Fifa has been preparing for an attack following attempts to
bring down systems at the 2002 World Cup, the 2003 Women’s World
Cup and the 2005 Confederations Cup.
The network for the World Cup, which will handle 15Tbytes of
data over the next month, is run from a Munich datacentre. Fifa has
a replacement datacentre on standby should it fail. In addition,
each stadium has its own servers in case the network connection is
lost, and a second logically separated datacentre should the first
fail.
Fifa’s CIO Michael Kelly said, “I am extremely confident that we
have taken all possible precautions against attacks on the
network.”
