IBM has introduced server software to help automate the
management of power consumption in datacentres and cut energy
costs.
The company has launched the IBM PowerExecutive software. The
system is an extension to the company’s IBM Director systems
management software.
IBM Power Executive allows firms to measure actual power usage
for single and multiple systems, and to glean data trends to enable
further analysis.
PowerExecutive uses IBM monitoring circuitry to determine how
much power is being used by the system and at what temperature it
is operating.
The software is available across a new range of System x servers
unveiled this week by IBM, as well as with IBM's BladeCenter server
range.
Using the system, customers are able to set a maximum power
consumption in watts for their servers, and PowerExecutive will
make sure that systems stick to it.
The new System x servers that can use PowerExecutive include the
x3650, x3550 and x3500 platforms.
