NEC has used the CeBIT exhibition in Hanover to launch a
wireless biometric security solution.
The NEC system sees fingerprint biometrics being used to
authenticate network access via an NEC laptop PC and an NEC 3G
mobile phone.
The fingerprint reader which comes as part of the system is
integrated with the SIM card contained in the 3G mobile phone.
NEC said, “Benefits for users are secure access to the office
LAN from anywhere, with no tokens or passwords needed.”
NEC said the system supported remote wireless access via virtual
private network (VPN) client software platforms, SSL (Secure
Sockets Layer) authentication via a browser, and in conjunction
with Windows log-ins.
IBM has offered an integrated fingerprint login system with a
range of its Thinkpad laptops for some time, but the NEC
differentiates itself by offering packaged secure wireless network
access.
