The open-source Apache Software Foundation has released
Apache Geronimo 1.0, an open Java-based application
server.
The solution has been under development for more than two years,
and its release creates another freely available open-source
alternative to proprietary Java application servers.
Sun Microsystems, which owns most of the main intellectual
property to the Java code, has until now refused to make the system
open-source, despite having a strategy of eventually making all its
software freely available.
Sun’s stance on Java has meant that many Java-based solutions
aren’t as cheap to deploy and use as many users would like, but
Apache’s Geronimo solution will give them another relatively cheap
option.
Java application servers run Java programs, including the
delivery of web pages. The Geronimo software works to the Java 2
Enterprise Edition 1.4 standard.
