IBM has developed a service to support users of Apache
Geronimo, an open source application server. IBM's backing should
help to drive adoption of the software suite and provide effective
support for companies developing software that runs on
Geronimo.
The service, called IBM Support for Apache Geronimo, provides two
levels of support to help developers resolve technical issues as
they build, deploy and manage Geronimo-based applications.
IBM also contributed some of its Gluecode software to the Geronimo
project. Called the Gluecode Management Console, it gives users a
centralised location to manage, monitor, and configure Geronimo
server components, making it easier to use.
IBM acquired Gluecode Software in May. Gluecode is based on core
open source technology from the Geronimo application server. Unlike
Apache, Gluecode is aimed at SMEs and departmental users, and is
designed to simplify application development by including the most
common services for building mainstream Java applications.
Robert LeBlanc, general manager, WebSphere, IBM Software Group,
said, "Developers that want pure open source technology can choose
Geronimo, and those that want an open source-based solution with
value added features can opt for Gluecode. Now both are backed by
support services from IBM."
