Car manufacturing giant General Motors has chosen Sun’s
Java Enterprise System to provide an integrated software
environment for its global IT infrastructure – making it the
largest company to sign up for the Java system.
The GM deal brings the total number of Java ES subscribers to
nearly one million.
The world’s largest car manufacturer, with 321,000 staff in 32
countries, will use the Java Web Infrastructure Suite and Sun Java
Application Platform Suite, in a move aimed at reducing IT
development and maintenance costs. The company also plans to add in
the Java Identity Management Suite.
GM will also deploy Sun’s Solaris 10 OS as the standard
operating system for the infrastructure.
Fred Killeen, GM's information systems and services chief
technology officer, said, “The decision to integrate the complete
Java ES stack is largely based on the success GM has enjoyed with
Sun Java ES software components. It supports our objective of
increasing the value of our development investment while reducing
operating costs.
“By expanding our infrastructure to the full Java ES stack, we
will simplify integration between systems throughout our network
while improving the user experience.”
