Java is being improved to provide better support for web
services and XML and offer a user interface borrowing features from
the Longhorn version of Windows.
The upcoming Java Enterprise Edition 5 release will feature
simplified web services support and more support of web services
standards. A beta of version 5 is due in the autumn, with the final
release planned for the first quarter of 2006.
Java Enterprise Edition 5 will enable the development of a web
service using only a few lines of code.
The forthcoming Java Standard Edition 6 platform, code-named
Mustang, is due in 2006. This will feature XML and web services
enhancements, along with desktop improvements.
The development language will feature a web services client
stack to enable clients to easily connect to web services, and
include a revamped XML stack and a new scripting engine.
Sun said the look and feel of the system would also be developed
to match Microsoft's Longhorn, platform, also due next year.
