WinSystems is to introduce a single board computer (SBC)
based on the Epic standard which will ship with embedded
Linux.
WinSystems was one of the originators of the Epic standard for
embedded single board computers (SBCs).
Known as EPX-C3, it is modelled on an x86-compatible 733MHz Via
C3 processor. Initial reaction to EPX-C3 has been positive.
EPX-C3's offers comprehensive support for PC processors,
graphics, networking, extensive I/O, and PC/104-Plus expansion.
Its on-board interfaces include10/100 Ethernet, Com and USB 2.0
ports, AGP video with interfaces for CRT, flat panel, and LVDS, a
screen resolution up to 1,920 x 1,440, and AC 97 audio in addition
to such standard fare as keyboard and mouse control.
Via's Padlock Hardware Security Suite, along with a random
number generator and AES cryptography accelerator, is also
included.
The board's ESP7000 (C3) processor works without a fan from -40º
to +85º C.
Epic standard
WinSystems, along with VersaLogic, Ampro Computers, Micro/sys,
and Octagon Systems, developed the Epic form-factor to serve as an
industry standard for intermediate-sized embedded SBCs.
As a result of the collaboration, "Embedded Platform for
Industrial Computing" (EPIC) was born, filling the gap between two
other major SBCs - PC/104, which is smaller than Epic - and the
larger form-factor EBX.
