HP and Opsware take on utility computing sector

Hewlett-Packard has formed a strategic relationship with data centre automation software company Opsware in a bid to gain advantage over utility computing rivals IBM and Sun Microsystems.
The deal calls for HP to distribute Opsware's software with its Utility Data Center (UDC), and HP's services group will become an Opsware authorised partner. Under the deal, HP's services group will supply consulting and implementation services in connection with its UDC.
Officials from both companies believed the combination of their respective products will encourage IT developers to move more quickly to a utility computing model in a quest to cut both cost and implementation time.
Forrester Research senior analyst Frank Gillette said the deal should put buyers' fears to rest on both the "efficacy and the visibility of Opsware's technology".
