Symantec is set to unveil a new network security management tool
called Symantec Security Management System (SSMS). The new product
promises to provide customers with a holistic view of their network
security.
The SSMS product will include antivirus features in addition to
firewall and intrusion detection capabilities and is designed for
corporate networks. The product will be unveiled at an event called
"Vision 360" hosted by Symantec in New York on 1 October.
Security software vendor Symantec has been looking to boost its
offerings in the network security sector since acquiring a host of
security companies during the summer. Those acquisitions have
included Recourse Technologies, makers of the ManHunt
intrusion-detection system, and Mountain Wave, makers of the
CyberWolf security management system.
ManHunt provided Symantec with a well-regarded intrusion-detection
system IDS product to replace its NetProwler software. CyberWolf
provided Symantec with security management software that can
perform real-time correlation of security alert information
generated by intrusion detection sensors as well as local
workstations and other network devices.
While not offering the ability to do real-time correlation such as
that offered by CyberWolf, SSMS is reported to have the ability to
aggregate security data from a number of different network security
products such as Check Point Software Technologies' firewalls,
antivirus products by Network Associates and Internet Security
Systems' RealSecure IDS products.
