Open source is not a bargaining chip

The majority of companies do not believe that using open source software in-house will help them to negotiate better terms with Microsoft, according to the IT managers surveyed in this week's Computer Weekly/Harvey Nash Big Question poll.

Research released by OpenForum Europe this week showed that interest in open source technologies, particularly the Linux operating system, has increased since Microsoft announced its licensing changes.

However, 63% of the IT managers questioned this week said using open source software would make no difference to their company's negotiations with Microsoft.

"Microsoft is too stubborn for that," said one respondent. "I do, however, believe it offers a viable alternative."
