Sotheby's, the prestigious art auctioneer, is teaming up with
online auction company eBay to sell old masters on the web.
Sotheby's, the world's oldest auctioneer with 226 years of business
behind it, will use eBay to drive traffic to its Sothebys.com
online auctions this summer.
Sotheby's will integrate eBay's Live Auctions technology on a site
that will be built and hosted by eBay. Sothebys.com will exist
within eBay as opposed to operating as a separate entity, though
both companies will market the site as Sothebys.com.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sotheby's online
site, like many others, has been unable to turn a profit for its
parent company since being launched two years ago.
