The inaugural Computer Weekly E-Business Excellence Awards reached a fitting climax last Tuesday, with a lavish gala awards dinner hosted at London's Intercontinental Hotel.

More than 600 movers-and- shakers from the business world and IT industry donned black-ties or ball-gowns to celebrate the best of UK e-business endeavour.

The panel of expert judges whittled down hundreds of entrants to a shortlist of 36 and the winners were announced on Tuesday night.

Broadcast journalist John Humphries presented the awards to some familiar names, including Woolwich, Virgin Atlantic Airways and J Sainsbury.

But size of organisation was no guarantee of success - there were awards for fish keepers, Aquazoo, and for start-up Aviation Briefing.

The evening reached a climax with the presentation of the UK E-Business Gold Award 2000 to Charles Schwab Europe.

The judges described Schwab's online brokering services as "a stunning example of how e-commerce can be utilised by a business to revolutionise totally the manner in which it works," adding that they were the "Benchmark on which other entries were judged".

Simon Kujawa of Ideal Boilers was declared the Computer Weekly E-Business Champion 2000, and received the keys to a brand new Lotus Elise sports car.
