reached a fitting climax last Tuesday, with a lavish gala awards
dinner hosted at London's Intercontinental Hotel.
More than 600 movers-and- shakers from the business world and IT
industry donned black-ties or ball-gowns to celebrate the best of
UK e-business endeavour.
The panel of expert judges whittled down hundreds of entrants to
a shortlist of 36 and the winners were announced on Tuesday
night.
Broadcast journalist John Humphries presented the awards to some
familiar names, including Woolwich, Virgin Atlantic Airways and J
Sainsbury.
But size of organisation was no guarantee of success - there
were awards for fish keepers, Aquazoo, and for start-up Aviation
Briefing.
The evening reached a climax with the presentation of the UK
E-Business Gold Award 2000 to Charles Schwab Europe.
The judges described Schwab's online brokering services as "a
stunning example of how e-commerce can be utilised by a business to
revolutionise totally the manner in which it works," adding that
they were the "Benchmark on which other entries were judged".
Simon Kujawa of Ideal Boilers was declared the Computer Weekly
E-Business Champion 2000, and received the keys to a brand new
Lotus Elise sports car.
