Hazel WardUK businesses should agree recycling contracts with suppliers at
the point of purchase or risk facing high recycling costs, the
Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER) has
warned.
The advice comes as part of ICER's response to three proposals
adopted by the European Commission on 13 June.
The first two deal with the collection and recovery of discarded
electronic equipment, and outline restrictions on the use of
hazardous substances in production stage, while the third focuses
on the environmental design of equipment.
Joy Boyce, chairwoman of industry council and head of corporate
environmental affairs at ICL, said the three proposals raised
practical problems for users but largely focused on producer
responsibility.
The proposals look set to become UK law in 2002.
