European consumers say businesses and governments are failing to protect their personal information online.
A survey commissioned by VeriSign found that 57% of UK respondents said banks, retailers and the government were failing to do enough to protect their data.
This was the highest percentage in Europe, with the level being 44% in Germany, 31% in Sweden, 27% in France and 20% in Denmark.
Recent high-profile business and government data losses may have affected the UK figure.
The overall levels were much higher when it came to personal fears about the threat of identity theft.
