European consumers say businesses and governments are failing to protect their personal information online.

A survey commissioned by VeriSign found that 57% of UK respondents said banks, retailers and the government were failing to do enough to protect their data.

This was the highest percentage in Europe, with the level being 44% in Germany, 31% in Sweden, 27% in France and 20% in Denmark.

Recent high-profile business and government data losses may have affected the UK figure.

The overall levels were much higher when it came to personal fears about the threat of identity theft.

These were:

- 79% in Germany

- 78% in the UK

- 70% in France

- 55% in Sweden

- 41% in Denmark
