Giesecke & Devrient has switched its smartcard production to Slovakia to cut costs.

G&D has opened a new smartcard processing facility in Nitra, Slovakia, after ending production at its Bavarian plant.

The Slovakian facility employs 250 people, and produces smartcards for various markets including mobile phones, electronic payment schemes, IT security and healthcare systems.

The new €20m (£13.8m) plant will also help G&D increase capacity in response to what it says is a 20% growth in worldwide demand for smartcards.

but the price of smartcards is also falling, particularly in the case of SIM cards for mobile phones, hence G&D’s decision to cut costs by moving to Slovakia.

Other areas of the G&D cards business, such as personalisation, development and marketing, will remain based in Germany.
