Enter the Computer Weekly Best Places to Work in IT Awards 2007

Time is fast running out if you want to enter your IT department into Computer Weekly's Best Places to Work in IT Awards.

Now in their fourth year, the awards have become established as the leading showcase for the UK's best IT departments - but the deadline for entering is Friday, 3 November, leaving you little more than a week to get your entries in.

The aim of the awards is to identify and encourage best practice in IT departments, including creating a positive working environment, providing opportunities for continued professional development and encouraging a healthy work/life balance.

Evidence shows that workplaces with these attributes cultivate people who are enthusiastic, pay attention to quality and go the extra mile to ensure excellence in the services their organisations provide.

Being a good place to work in IT makes sound business sense. Firms that look after their staff not only attract the best IT professionals, but importantly in an increasingly competitive job market, also hang on to them.

The Best Places to Work in IT Awards have shown that there is no one factor that makes an IT department a success. Winners in the past have paid attention to a wide range of issues, from flexible working, to training and benchmarking with other IT departments.

Britannia Building Society, which earned the top prize in the 2006 awards, impressed the judges with initiatives such as allowing staff to compress five days' work into four days, strong professional development programmes, and its commitment to a healthy work/life balance.

Organisations that have entered in the past say they have benefited simply from taking part. The experience has helped them raise the profile of their IT departments both internally and externally, boost staff motivation and help attract the best talent in the industry.

The awards will be judged by a panel of experts from business, IT and recruitment. Organisations will be assessed on criteria such as:

● Positive working environment, shown by effective team building, stimulating projects and an innovative and attractive benefits package.

● Continued professional development through enjoyable and effective training, coaching and mentoring, with productive appraisal methods and genuine career progression.

● Practical evidence of commitment to a fulfilling work/life balance and to equal opportunities.

● Value to business. How being a good place to work feeds back into creating more value to the business through better service, quality and customer understanding.

The competition is open to anyone who considers that their IT department meets these criteria. The experience of previous awards shows that size is no barrier, with both large and small firms being recognised. Entry is via a simple online form.

The awards will be presented on 2 March 2007 at a gala lunch at the Grosvenor Square Hotel in London.
