Enterprise Wi-Fi network revenues up 43.4% in Q2-2011: Report

The enterprise Wi-Fi network revenues grew 43.4% year over year to reach almost $725 million in the second quarter of 2011 (Q2-2011), according to the latest findings of IDC Worldwide Quarterly Wireless LAN Tracker. Enterprise Wi-Fi network revenues grew 21.9% sequentially over Q1-2011.


The global Wi-Fi network market also showed high sequential growth, with total revenues increasing 13.4% over Q1-2011. The IDC Tracker reported year over year revenue growth of 29.7%, reaching $1.52 billion (excluding Wi-Fi network NICs). The retail Wi-Fi network market also performed well, growing 19.4% year over year to reach $800 million in Q2-11, and growing 6.6% sequentially.

According to Rohit Mehra, director, Enterprise Communications Infrastructure at IDC, “Enterprise mobility has emerged as one of the key priorities for CIOs and IT managers across all geographies, and the growth of Wi-Fi network market revenues during the second quarter is a clear testament to that market dynamic. The tremendous momentum behind smart mobile devices and their continued uptake in the enterprise for business and vertical-specific applications are driving enterprises to move forward with upgrades and extensions of their wireless networks.”

The IDC Tracker reports that enterprise deployments of the new 802.11n standard made up 79.1% of revenues, and 66.6% of unit shipments in Wi-Fi equipment, revealing a continued demand for older 802.11 equipment. However, 802.11n continues to grow and is fast becoming the standard for Wi-Fi networks.
