IT staff supporting proposed European legislation on software patents are being urged by the BCS to campaign via IT trade association Intellect.

According to Department of Trade & Industry advice, patents give software developers stronger protection than copyright, which protects code but does not stop others from developing their own software to achieve the same effect.

The BCS said support for the Intellect-backed campaign for the proposed patents directive could range from signing a manifesto, writing to the DTI and members of the European Parliament, to speaking to the media with help from Intellect.
