A new alliance has been formed to help deliver voice over IP services to users that can work over any fixed line or wireless network using a single number.

Network convergence company BridgePort Networks has joined forces with IBM, WiFi company Airespace and security company VeriSign to form the MobileIGNITE alliance.

The alliance is pushing for VoIP services -  which are now becoming available via fixed line broadband services - to be integrated as quickly as possible with WiFi networks and mobile operator networks. This will allow users to benefit from cheaper VoIP calls regardless of their location or the handset they are using.

BridgePort and the other partners are now looking for fixed line and wireless service providers to join them to bring out one-stop service packages to make it easier for users to adopt the technology.
