Newly appointed IT minister Mike O’Brien has praised the role of the media in alerting government to IT problems.
Speaking exclusively to Computer Weekly, he said, "It is only through the TV and computer magazines that you get aware of problems arising."
O’Brien said that when he was a Home Office minister it was through Computer Weekly that he had been alerted to some IT problems in his department.
The minister said his wife, who worked for Logica, would sometimes highlight important articles for him to read.
"The computer industry consists of one million people and is an important industry," he said. "There are some issues where government has to intervene and we need to ensure that the intervention is successful."
