Oracle gives millions in software to Chinese universities

Oracle Software Systems is to donate software worth £77m to 50 Chinese universities under an agreement signed with China's ministry of education.

The donation of software, together with donated course materials and establishment of 50 teaching assistant scholarships, will go to universities in western China, which has lagged behind eastern and southern China in terms of economic development, and will be used to train 15,000 students to use Oracle software.

The software-donation agreement follows a similar deal announced by Oracle in 2002. Under that deal, the company donated £38m worth of software to universities in southern, eastern and northern China, Oracle said, adding that more than 8,000 students had been trained on Oracle's products as a result of that programme.
