The new BCS membership structure has been hailed a success after 1,300 people joined the society in the professional grades in the first month.

This is almost double the total for the whole of the previous year and it means the BCS is well ahead of its target of recruiting at least 10,000 people into the professional grades of fellow and member in the first year.

It aims to double its 40,000 membership in three years.

The new arrangements mean IT specialists can have a professional title and letters after their name earlier in their careers, and with little bureaucracy. They can also progress to what the BCS calls the gold standard, with the title chartered IT professional.
