The Laurel Pub Company, which owns the Hogshead chain, has rolled out business intelligence software from Cognos to allow it to negotiate better deals with suppliers.

The company, which has 635 outlets and 10,000 employees across the UK, installed the system to improve the reporting process of its £12.8m electronic point of sale system, which was implemented in 2002.

Bruce Gardner, IT manager at Laurel, said, "Armed with a simplified pricing structure and detailed knowledge about the success or otherwise of specific product lines and promotions, we are in a far stronger position to negotiate better deals with suppliers.

"Since going live we have already negotiated improved deals that has saved the business £125,000 and expect to save £500,000 over the next five years."
