David Morriss, who joined IBM as a systems engineer and ended up on the company's UK board, has been appointed BCS deputy president for 2003-2004, a post which is likely to lead to him becoming president next year.

Morriss started his career at London Underground after gaining an electrical engineering degree. He has been director of business plans and general manager for software and services at IBM UK, and a regional industry sector general manager for IBM.

He does charitable work through the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and IT4Communities. He is also chairman of the BCS web initiative steering group.
