Enterprise software giant SAP will not be the same now that Hasso Plattner, its co-chief executive officer and chairman, is stepping down from the full-time management role at the company he helped found in 1972.

Looking back on his achievements, Plattner said the launch of mySAP.com was crucial in consolidating the company's position in the market.

"It was the right strategy," he said, but he conceded, "Probably we should have spent one more year in development before we came out, but we had to accelerate it."

MySAP.com offered "a clear strategy, with a clear product delivery in a short period of time after the announcement."

SAP's new NetWeaver technology offered "the opportunity to develop applications based on a database or on services. Before, we only did applications based on databases," he added.

Plattner has few regrets about his business career, but he admitted, "I would have liked to have founded Microsoft."

Creating some of the applications Microsoft built, "would have been much easier than building the heavy-duty enterprise stuff" SAP developed, said Plattner. "But you can't do it all."
