Lucent Technologies and T-Mobile International has launched a pilot project to test services that use next-generation mobile broadband technology, including seamless roaming with other wireless systems.

Under the agreement, Lucent will supply T-Mobile with its Secure Mobile Data Solutions for Enterprises, an integrated package of hardware and software designed to let business customers use their laptop PCs or PDAs to access all applications they normally use in the office from any location.

The 3GlobeTrotter 3G mobile broadband wireless modem PC card, jointly developed by Lucent and Option, supports high-speed data connections on laptops, PDAs and other mobile devices.

Last year, Lucent and Option completed the first data calls using the GlobeTrotter card at Lucent's labs, where substantial development work on the product has been done.

As part of the test, Lucent will deploy software tools to support access to, and seamless roaming between, 3G and WLAN (wireless LAN) networks.

T-Mobile customers can already access the operator's GPRS network using the wireless PC card.
