AOL Time Warner's board has unanimously elected chief executive officer Dick Parsons to become chairman in May, following Steve Case's announcement he would step down from the position.

Case had been widely criticised during his tenure as chairman for what some analysts and investors consider a busted merger between America Online and Time Warner.

AOL Time Warner has gone through several personnel shakeups with a number of top executives leaving the company. Chief executive officer Gerald Levin retired May and Robert Pittman, chief operating officer and interim head of AOL, left in July.

The company has been working to shift away from its new-media operations and its emphasis on the AOL unit.
