The survey compared the fees of Internet and telecommunication services from major Internet providers and telecommunication carriers offered in Tokyo, New York, London, Paris, Düsseldorf and Geneva.
In Tokyo, NTT East's two ADSL services, one at 1.5Mbps (bits per second) and the other at 8Mbps, cost ¥4,850 (£25.70) and ¥5,050 (£26.76) per month, respectively. Yahoo! Japan offers an 8Mbps ADSL service for ¥2,453 (£13). The figures suggest that in Tokyo ADSL services are the cheapest and fastest among the cities.
Among the other cities, New York's Verizon Communications' 1.5Mbps DSL service costs most at ¥7,176 (£38) a month, and Geneva's Swisscom service at 768Kbps is the second highest-priced at ¥6,993 (£37).
Users in Tokyo also enjoy the cheapest and the fastest cable Internet service, the survey claimed. Tokyo's Its Communications charges ¥3,200 (£17) for an 8Mbps service, while London's Telewest Communications offers a 1Mbps service at ¥7,516 (£40) a month.
However, when it comes to a comparison of mobile phone service fees, users in Tokyo spend most, the report said.
Since each city's mobile telecommunication carriers offer various different package services, the survey picked packages that included two hours of voice calls per month. Carriers in Düsseldorf and Geneva do not offer such services and were not included in this comparison.
While users of NTT DoCoMo's service in Tokyo spend an average of ¥5,310 (£28) a month, users of Verizon Wireless's service in New York spend ¥4,190 (£22.21), Vodafone users in London spend ¥3,998 (£21.20) and Orange users in Paris spend ¥3,055 (£16.20), the report said.
