Precise Software Solutions is set to launch Precise/Indepth for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to enable database administrators to detect and resolve root causes of application performance degradation.

Jointly engineered with Microsoft, Precise's new software tool utilises sampling technology to reduce overheads and enable continuous monitoring of performance in a production environment.

The tool is intended to support mission-critical applications deployed on SQL Server such as SAP R/3.

Precise/Indepth features an API for collecting data from SQL Server, said Tom Murphy, Precise director of product strategy. "The API was written to provide very efficient collection, which means we could actively collect [data] at a high frequency with low overhead, and the impact of doing that allows the end users to get a complete picture of the environment," Murphy said.

Performance metrics are measured and correlated to identify symptoms and causes of application performance bottlenecks. Data is stored in the Precise Performance Warehouse, enabling users to analyse historical patterns.

Precise/Indepth for SQL Server 2000 will be available on 9 July.
