Content management software supplier Documentum is to extend its Enterprise Content Management suite with the release of Content Distribution Services (CDS) later this month, writes Antony Adshead.

CDS is the fruit of Documentum's acquisition of Boxcar Software in January. It will enable users to automatically distribute unstructured data in a variety of formats.

CDS allows users to distribute content using any transport protocol to subscribers and can be scheduled, events-based or on-demand.

Definitions of content management vary, but the Documentum version seems to share attributes with comprehensive knowledge management solutions which seek to classify information and make it available to relevant users and application integration tools which make, often structured but discrete, data available to enterprise applications.

Documentum's model is based on the development of a single repository for unconnected, unstructured data ranging from word processing documents to images. In common with knowledge management and application integration, it uses workflow-type rules to distribute content automatically.

The company is primarily targeting CDS at financial services, manufacturing, media and transport businesses because these sectors often need to distribute unstructured information.
