As Computer Weekly went to press, the Government was putting the final touches to its long-awaited software licensing deal with Microsoft for UK civil servants.

A spokesperson for the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) said, "We hope to make an announcement in the next few days."

The Government has spent the past few weeks locked in negotiations with the software giant over the agreement, prompting speculation that the deal may be in jeopardy.

Last year OGC officials warned that Microsoft's licensing changes could cost the Government an extra £60m a year - enough to pay for a new fully equipped hospital.
