The Gateway 300SE, priced at $599 (£420) is aimed at first-time buyers and people who want a second PC at home, Gateway said. It comes with a 1.1GHz Celeron processor from Intel, 128Mbytes of memory, a 20Gbyte hard drive, a 15in monitor, a CD-RW drive, a 10/100 Ethernet card and a one-year subscription to AOL.

The 500SE, priced at $999 (£700), is aimed at users who play video games, and use multimedia applications. It features Intel's 1.6GHz Pentium 4 processor, a 15in LCD flat-panel display and a CD-RW drive, Gateway said. The 500SE also includes a 32Mbyte NVidia GeForce2 MX200 AGP graphics card, a 20Gbyte hard drive and a one-year subscription to AOL.

Gateway saw its share of the US market fall in the last quarter of 2001, from 8.8% to 6.3%, according to IDC. The company closed its European operations in September 2001.
