The survey of 150 "strategic IT decision makers" from companies with over 500 employees also found that less than a third of those who had made contingency plans considered them to be effective.
The findings were released to coincide with the launch of an HP federated storage area management strategy and additional modules for HP OpenView, designed to help IT managers exert control of storage across the business.
Paul Trowbridge, director of marketing for SAN switch vendor Brocade, said, "Many of our customers who have deployed SAN are now looking at contingency planning."
Trowbridge said that although contingency planning made SANs more complex, if implemented successfully it made them more resilient.
