A series of independent qualifications for systems developers is being launched by the BCS Information Systems Examinations Board.

The new Business Systems Development Scheme offers diplomas in business analysis, systems analysis and design, rapid application development, data management, and the SSADM4+ development method.

IT specialists can work towards diplomas by taking a selection of certificates from a choice of 18 topics. Most diplomas require two core and three optional certificates, typically gained through a short course and an examination. People getting the required certificates - each a valuable qualification in its own right - take an oral exam to gain a diploma.

Users and training organisations have already expressed support for the scheme. It will be available from 1 March, with a briefing for training organisations and employers on 1 February in London. Click here for full details.
