Public sector organisations are failing to keep tabs on internal secure data transfer procedures and costs, according to the result of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Business process management company Software AG said it asked local authorities and central government departments about how they transfer data securely. It reported 14 organisations out of 26 were unable to provide any information on the process because they are not required to keep it.

Tim Holyoake, lead technologist at Software AG, said, "The public should be very concerned that such limited insight into the procedures and costs surrounding the transfer of sensitive information between organisations is so widespread."

The company said the only organisation that was able to provide full answers to the questions was the Information Commissioner's Office.
