Microsoft allows axed staff to keep excess severance pay

Antony Savvas

Microsoft has reversed its decision in calling for axed staff to pay back excess redundancy payments.

Redmond made 1,400 staff redundant last month and news broke at the weekend that the company had written letters to those overpaid, demanding the excess cash back.

The mistake was said to be down to an accounting error in its US human resources department.

It has since transpired that the mistake only affected 25 staff, covering excess amounts of between $4,000 and $5,000.

Following widespread publicity about the "pay back" letters sent out, Microsoft has taken the decision to allow the overpaid to keep the cash.
