Newsnight editor to become Google PR chief

Mark Watts

Google has hired the editor of BBC2's Newsnight as its public relations chief. Peter Barron is joining Google as head of communications and public affairs for the UK, Ireland and Benelux regions.

Barron, who will report to DJ Collins, Google's director of communications and public affairs for Europe, is expected to start in September.

He introduced several digital media features at Newsnight, such as daily e-mails and a vodcast, which were often scorned on air by presenter Jeremy Paxman.

Barron began his career at the BBC as a news trainee, and became editor of Newsnight in May 2004 after working as a producer on the news and current affairs programme.

He also worked on Channel 4 News, which he joined in 1998 as deputy editor.
