Government adopts IT standard for childcare data

Antony Savvas

The government’s GovTalk programme has adopted a new IT standard for managing childcare provider data.

The Childcare Provider XML schema standard has been developed by Opportunity Links, a voluntary organisation that focuses on information management strategies for childcare services.

The standard is now available on the GovTalk website and defines a standard structure for XML data. It can be used to describe details of a childcare provider, including contact details, facilities and costs.

The schema could be used by organisations to transfer or share childcare provider records. In addition, the schema could be used to structure childcare information for online searches by the public.

The new standard is optional, although it is thought it could be specified for use in the procurement process among the public and private sector.
